In 1790 Thomas Saint, of London, applied for the first patent of a sewing machine design; in 1955 Walt Disney’s $17 million Disneyland theme park opened in Anaheim, California. Special invitations had been sent out to 15,000 people (including to the actor and future US president Ronald Reagan), but ticket counterfeiting led to 28,154 guests being admitted; in 1959 the first skull of the early hominid Australopithecus boisei was discovered by Mary Leakey in the Olduvai Gorge of Tanzania, east Africa; in 1979 the first session of a directly elected European parliament started in Strasbourg, with Simone Veil as its first president (obituary, July 1, 2017); in 2014 a Malaysia Airlines jet, with 298 passengers and crew on board, was shot down in a part of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russia separatists.
Nature notes
On the floor of the barn, amid the dust and old straw, were fat black pellets and, here and there, pale feathers barred with golden brown: the barn owl box in the rafters was in use. The feathers’ colour is part of a strategy to save their owner some weight: those with dark colouration are stronger but weigh more, as well as being costlier, in energy terms, to produce. Owls’ plumage lacks the waterproofing of other species, instead being specially adapted for near-silent flight: sound is broken up by structures on the wing’s leading edge, while a fine coating of tiny fibres prevents friction.
